This was the first oil painting I ever did! It was in my high school AP Art class (above). We were told to build a portrait out of fabric. I didn't know that this would end up becoming how I figured out what the rest of my portfolio would be about for the year. I went on to keep using textiles, textures and fabric that reminded me of people I cared about to make representative self portraits.
Since we had tight deadlines for these pieces, and needed to crank out 15 by the end of the year, I remember deciding to switch to Prismacolor pencils. I was a lot faster and more experienced with them. This piece I remember was supposed to represent my mom, it used a chair arm cover and a Downeast basics shade shirt of hers (iykyk). I also played with some strings hanging off of the forms, because I thought it was interesting to physically represent the ties that she has left with me.
